Essential Guide while Flying with Pets

Traveling with your pets can be a little arduous task in the same way as flying with a baby. Also, our pets are likely to hate traveling in the air. You cannot just bring them like other passengers but there are other procedures that you need to follow as well. Plus, the guidelines for flying with pets may vary from one airline to the other. So, it’d be better to check the prerequisites of your airlines.

Firstly, you need to get it cleared by your airlines whether you can fly with your pet or not. For the same, several factors are instrumental including breed, size, and health. As per the federal Animal Welfare Act from the Agriculture Department, your pet should be at least 8 weeks old and also accustomed to food for at least 5 days before traveling in a plane. But the airlines also set their minimum age limits for the pets.

Coming to the size of the pets, you’ve got two options. If the size of the pet is small enough to travel in a ventilated carrier that can fit under the passenger seat, there’s no problem in accompanying them. Besides, the other option is cargo but for this alternative, pets have to arrive earlier than the usual check-in time at the airport. So, always try to go a little early because airlines have a limit on the number of pets that can fly in a plane. Coming to the cost, the expenses vary according to the respective airline and the mode of transport.

Given below are some of the tips that you show follow before flying with your pet:

  • Always avoid using a muzzle on your pet when you’re in an airplane. It may result in a life-threatening situation for the animal.
  • Make sure the pet is quite familiar with staying inside a ventilated carrier prior to the journey.
  • Never use sedatives on your pet during a flight. It can lead to a dangerous situation at higher altitudes.
  • Put an identification tag on your pet as well as on its carrier that includes the name of the pet, phone number, and address.
  • If your pet is flying in cargo, then the extreme weather conditions might be dangerous for them. If that’s the case, then the airline may not allow the pet to travel.
